We are excited to announce the second annual Movie Musings June Movie Festival! Come in to Calvert Library for a FREE Screening of "Point Break" (1991)
This June Calvert Library will be hosting its second annual Movie Musings Movie Festival! This year we'll be hosting a FREE screening of "Point Break" (1991) as well as the short "Destiny in Alice" (2007).
Our main feature presentation "Point Break" is a fast-paced, action-pack crime film that focusses on extreme sports fanatics who rob banks in California. Follow Agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) as he tries to identify the mysterious band of thieves who call themselves the "Dead Presidents." Praised for it's memorable action sequence and sense of humor, "Point Break" was directed by Katheryn Bigelow, the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Directing for her 2008 film "The Hurt Locker." Like all of Bigelow's work, the struggles of main character Johnny Utah include explicit questioning of hypermasculinity, and an exploration of queer themes. Don't miss this landmark classic!
Before the film, we'll be screening the short "Destiny in Alice" (2007), about the central Australian town of Alice Springs and its thriving lesbian community. The documentary is filmed in a delightful parody style of nature documentaries, guiding the audience through the "habitat" of the women who love women in Alice Springs. It'll be a fun way to start the festival, and celebrate Pride Month!
