From June through August, Mill Creek Middle School, 8th grade science students environmental artwork will be on public display at the Calvert Library in Prince Frederick.
At Mill Creek Middle School, 8th grade science students are using their voices—and their brushes—to advocate for a more environmentally friendly world.
As part of a powerful fourth-quarter unit on human-environment interaction, students have been exploring the intersection of science, society, and creative expression.
Throughout the unit, students examined critical environmental issues such as Flint, Michigan’s water crisis, Cancer Alley, asthma disparities, and heavy metal contamination. They also discussed and analyzed data on toxic waste exposure, including historical practices in Calvert County. By rooting the project in local history, students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the issues affecting their own communities—and be inspired to take action.
These compelling watercolor pieces reflect both scientific understanding and a deep sense of civic responsibility, inviting the community to engage with environmental issues through the eyes of young changemakers.
This year, their work is reaching beyond the classroom walls.
