Meeting Room East & West CombinedCelebrate the 100th anniversary of the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department (NBVFD) with a presentation by Assistant Chief John Tippett on the department's history from the early days of operating out of a garage to today's modernized fire department.
Join us for an evening with John Tippett, assistant chief with the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department (NBVFD), as he delivers a fascinating look into the 100-year history of the NBVFD through the department’s ten decades of service. The department serving our community today was chartered by a group of concerned citizens on August 4, 1926. The run up to that historical date, and the ensuing 100 years, are a microcosm of the American Story.
John started his research three years ago while looking at old newspaper stories for a small picture book project. This then ballooned into a treasure trove as he learned from community members that the story of the NBVFD is an integral part of the evolution of the Twin Beaches, Calvert County, and lower Anne Arundel County. The small picture book project expanded to a more detailed story of the NBVFD that is expected to be available by the centennial.
John Tippett is a fifty-year veteran of the fire service who has been fortunate enough to live out his life’s dream. He spent 35 years in the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue System, starting as a high school cadet and retiring as a safety battalion chief. He was also the leader of Maryland Task Force 1, a FEMA urban search and rescue team with responses to the Pentagon on September 11th, Hurricane Katrina, and other disasters. In 2008, he became the first deputy chief of operations for the Charleston, South Carolina, Fire Department. After serving a year as interim chief, John moved to North Beach in 2018 for a position with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation as its director of fire service programs. John retired from that position in 2025 and now enjoys serving the community as a NBVFD member.
