Join us for a community listening session shaping JPPM's upcoming exhibit, Witnesses of Wallville. Discover and share stories that bring this historic rural community to life. Your voice will help guide the themes and content of this long-term exhibit opening in 2027.
Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM) and Calvert Library Prince Frederick will sponsor a listening session at the library to solicit community input in developing a new exhibit. With funding from a Chesapeake Gateways grant, JPPM will install a long-term exhibit entitled “Witnesses of Wallville: A Rural Community in Context.” Content for the exhibit draws from previously gathered oral histories, historical research, archaeological evidence, and (perhaps most importantly) from the community of people that call and have called this place home. Since 2022, this 7-square mile community (of which the grounds of JPPM is a part) has been the focus of a multidisciplinary research project by park staff in collaboration with descendant communities and local residents. The initial Witnesses of Wallville Project was funded in part by an African American Civil Rights grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service.
The Witnesses of Wallville will be mounted as a long-term exhibit at JPPM, a Chesapeake Gateways place, opening in late 2027. Interested members of the public are encouraged to attend this in-person session, or a virtual session that will be held on February 18 to provide input on themes and content for the exhibit. For more information on the virtual listening session, email jppm.wallville@maryland.gov.
