"Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley
Monday, November 02
1:00pm - 2:00pm
Join us to wrap up spooky season and discuss the classic novel "Frankenstein." Written in response to a friendly challenge to pass the time, Mary Shelley's work established both science fiction and monster literature as genres, and widely expanded the scope and importance of the female Gothic subgenre.
Young scientist Victor Frankenstein creates a sentient but grotesque creature through unorthodox scientific experiments. Horrified by his creation, Frankenstein abandons the creature, who in turn is shunned by society due to its appearance. The creature, lonely and miserable, eventually seeks revenge against its creator, setting off a long and tragic chain of events. Victor is driven to the brink trying to destroy his creation before it destroys everything Victor loves, resulting in a powerful story of love, friendship, and the ongoing battle between man and monster.
