This month to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month Monday Movie Musings is doing an exciting Double Feature of two legendary Chicano musicians!
First up is 1997's "Selena," written and directed by Gregory Nava, and telling the story of Selena Quintanilla Pérez, more commonly known by the mononym "Selena." Released just two years after the young star's murder, the film features a breakout early performance by Jennifer Lopez, alongside industry legends Edward James Olmos and Constance Marie. A tale of fame, fortune, and tragedy, both the real life Selena and her fictional screen counter-part are icons of the Tejano community and Hispanic-American folk heroes. Put on your disco boots, ¡Es tiempo de bailar!
And if you can't get enough, or just looking for something different, next up is 1987's "La Bamba." Written and directed by Luis Valdez, a pioneer of the Chicano movement and founder of the "El Teatro Campesino" theater troupe. "La Bamba" tells the story of Chicano rock star Ritchie Valens, who championed Spanish-speaking Rock, also known as "Rock en español." Another musician who died tragically young, at 17 Valens was a part of the plane crash that also claimed the lives of Buddy Holly and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, commonly referred to as "The Day the Music Died." At the request of Valens' family, the Mexican-American rock band Los Lobos recorded all of the songs in the film, including the titular "La Bamba."
Join us for some great discussion, and some great music!
