This month's double feature is: "Paper Moon" (1973) and "Mary & Max" (2009). Both are available on Kanopy through Calvert Library. Watch the movie before the event and join us for a lively discussion on Monday night. Please register to receive an emailed link to the Zoom event an hour before it begins.
First up is "Paper Moon" from 1973!
Ryan O'Neal teams up with his daughter Tatum in this bright, warm, and funny period film for which Tatum won an Oscar for her first film role, making her the youngest actress to ever receive this honor.
O'Neal plays the smooth-talking con man Moses Pray, driving through depression-era Kansas with a carload of deluxe bibles, a gold tooth behind a convincing smile, and a list of newly widowed prospects for his line. Addie (Tatum O'Neal) is a cigarette-smoking, nine-year-old orphan who hooks up with Moses and manages to show the master con man a trick or two. Madeline Kahn also joins the team as the funny, neurotic Trixie Delight. (From Kanopy)
If that's not your speed, or you're looking for something else, next up is "Mary & Max" from 2009.
Mary (Toni Collette) is a lonely eight-year-old girl who lives with her alcoholic mother, her factory working father, and a pet rooster in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia; and Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a forty-four-year old, severely obese man with Asperger's syndrome living in New York City. Two unlikely pen-pals, they share a lengthy long-distance relationship that becomes complicated by Max's mental health issues, which cause problems both physical and emotional. Despite the heaviness of many of the topics covered, "Mary & Max" remains full of joy for learning to appreciate all that life has to offer, and the ways that our friends can support us when we need them most.
