Do you remember the days of tobacco in Calvert County? Drop-in and participate in a community art project by painting small squares for a mosaic-style mural which will hang in a new exhibit titled "Christmas Came when the Tobacco Was Sold: Tobacco Farming in Southern Maryland" at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum.

JPPM (and YOU) are creating a large mosaic-style mural to complement a new exhibit entitled, "Christmas Comes When the Tobacco is Sold: The History of Tobacco in Southern Maryland." The exhibit's goal is to create a more inclusive interpretation of the tobacco economy, which touched the life of nearly every person in Southern Maryland for centuries. The Park is inviting local community members to paint small squares which will be scanned individually and arranged digitally to recreate - mosaic-style - the original design created by a Maryland artist. The final product will be a high-quality, digital image printed in an 8' x 8' format. We hope that this collaborative mosaic mural will play a key part in making this exhibit more meaningful to the people of Calvert County. The public can paint any image on their square that is meaningful to them, as long as the required color scheme is followed. By involving the public in the creation of this mosaic, the project will give the community a personal connection to the exhibit and the stories it will tell. Do you want to contribute to this worthwhile project? Be part of this community collaboration by painting small square. No need to be an expert--we will set you up for success. Contact Deb Rantanen at debra.rantanen@maryland.gov or at 410-586-8504 if you have questions. You'll be using chalk pastels. This project made possible by Maryland State Arts Council. |
