Join Calvert Library and partners to watch the documentary "Six Triple Eight" about the 855 Black women from the Women's Army Corps who were sent to clear the backlog of mail in the European theater during World War II. After the film, we'll be joined by the Executive Producer, James William Theres and a panel of local Black women veterans who we can talk to about what's changed and what hasn't.

Celebrate Women's History month by learning about this extraordinary corps of Black women in the European theater of World War II.  View the trailer  We will watch the film online together from 6-7pm, then hear from the Executive Producer and an exceptional panel.

Jennifer Foxworthy

Navy, 1991-2013.  Jennifer served our country proudly for 21.7 years.  One of her greatest accomplishments was being among the elite few to graduate from Naval Aircrew Candidate training. For over 14 years as an Aircrewman, logged over 3700 flight hours and received four Air Medals. She also knocked down stereotypes by becoming the first African American female Aircrewman, the first African American Aircrewman in the enlisted ranks and the first female In Flight Technician during her squadron tours.

She is pursuing her second career as the Founder and CEO of Inspirationally Speaking, LLC, and Unstoppable You Ministries, Inc. 

Panelists

Roquel Norris

Army 1987-1991. Roquel Norris has lived in Huntingtown, MD for the last 20 years, where she is raising two children as a widow. She is the daughter of a US Army Veteran, the late Leon B. McLaughlin, who served in the military as an Infantryman for over 30 years. He served two times in the Vietnam War and was a highly decorated soldier. Like her dad, Roquel served in the US Army in her father’s footsteps for almost 4 years, as an Administrative Specialist.  Roquel is currently a business owner and a writer, who just published a book in 2022 an Amazon e-book, “Postal Contract Whistleblower”.  Since leaving the Army, where she served during Operation Desert Storm.  Roquel has a new mission. She is an advocate for social justice and hopes that she and her family will do their part to make this world a better place than they found it.  

Pamela Cousins

U.S. Air Force, 1984-1994. Ms. Pamela Cousins' spent her active duty and reserve career protecting U.S. national security interests by delivering space-based global situational awareness for national decision-makers—including the U.S. president, Congress, National Reconnaissance Office, Secretary of Defense, and the warfighter. Presently, Ms. Cousins is a dedicated public servant and community leader.

Tayra Garcia

Tayra Garcia

National Guard/Army, 2006-2022. Tayra Garcia is a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, she is currently pursuing a second career in the mental health counseling and education field. She enlisted into the Puerto Rico National Guard in June 2006. She retired in January 2022, from an Army Career, serving as a Human Resources Commissioned Officer. As a company commander, she established and operated a few army postal offices (APOs) in Europe. Her final assignment was a transformational and organizational change advisor for HQDA DA. While serving in the Army she deployed to Afghanistan where simultaneously served as the Sexual Assault Victim Advocate and Master Resiliency Trainer.  

Elizabeth Lawton

Navy, 1987-2007. Ms. Lawton’s career path includes 20+ years as a Military Logistician. She held multiple appointments as a US Naval Officer, as well as comparable government civilian assignments. As a Federal Subcontractor, her company grew steadily until 2012 when Affordable Care Act implementations shifted a National agenda toward boosting insurance coverage for all citizens. In response, Ms. Lawton reinvented the vision of the LLC and she founded a not-for-profit organization. Ms. Lawton continues to grow that company’s consulting capability through partnerships with local for-profit, non-profit, and non-governmental organizations alike.

Qiana Katie Royal

Air Force, 1998-2002. Program Manager with over 20 years of Federal Service. DBA candidate, MBA. Proven ability to expertly manage complex national and international programs in a dynamic environment. Recognized leader with strengths in strategic planning, organizational development and interpersonal skills.
